I was taught on a manual. I had driven one for 13 years, and then I bought an automatic. I have to say I found driving to be more mundane, and a lot less exciting. I felt like I needed more to do. So I sold the auto and bought another manual.

I guess a manual tranny is not for everyone, my wife included.

I can drive both. I have a six speed auto. You would have to pay me big bucks to go back to a manual.

>>just like the crank, the manual transmission will eventually go away altogether.<< -- dream on, Beemer! After half a century manual transmissions still thrive. Why? People *want* them- for all the reasons already listed. The crank didn't offer too much over the electric starter. No comparison.

I still prefer manuals for smaller cars, but have autos now.

I prefer a manual for smaller vehicles and a automatic for my truck.

You have more control of your vehicle with a manual, as for rolling backwards on a hill, the brake pedal works very well. The same pedal you use with an auto on a hill. I have drove strickly manuals for the last 21 years and have no intention on changing.

I'd gladly drive a manual again though both of my present vehicles are automatics.

"automatics last longer"?
Don't think so. Far more parts, weight etc needs more maintenance and replacement. I'm well over 100k on my clutch, heard from several on the GB boards who are well over 200 on their sticks. There are exceptions but generally manual transmissions, including the clutch, require less maintenance over time, last longer, are lighter, and use less gas every day. And when maintenance does come it's cheaper on a stick.
(btw the 2nd person singular is "you") ;-)

The coorrdination will come if you practice on a manual for a couple of weeks. As to rolling backwards, you wouldn't have accidents if drivers behind a manual insisted on leaving less than a foot of space between the two vehicles, especially on steep hills.

automatic lasts longer, with manual u have to change the clutch every so often .. plus u wont have as many idiots in traffic rolling backwards causing accidents cause they cant drive standard.

I like an auto but have no problems with the manual. When I first learned to drive there was a huge difference in mileage but that has definitely closed. Having driven a very old army ambulance I learned the clutch and gear shift were just a few more things that could create problems at a bad time.

it's not as hard as you think & becomes second nature after a couple weeks, however if you don't have the inclination then don't do it. I've seen some pretty bad std drivers out there in heavy traffic & don't need more in an area like Toronto.

Under most conditions I prefer a manual; but in stop and go traffic I sometimes miss an automatic. How smooth and precise a given manual tranny is can make a big difference too.

While it does take a little coordination to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission, it sounds like you shouldn't be driving at all, especially if you have trouble walking, handicaps excepted. Just like riding a bike, once you know how to do it, it's almost second nature.

Everyone should be taught how to drive a manual transmission vehicle in drivers ed or by their parents.

IMHO, people shouldn't call a "manual" transmission a "standard" transmission.
