If you do repairs your self its very cheap to own an older vehicle.
It costs money when you are dependant on other people to fix your problems.

Definitely don't get an Olds Alero-- I drive a 2 door coupe and it gets gas mileage in the teens!! It's ridiculous!

Lots of them get about 30mpg. Look for the one with least wear and tear.

The Toyota Tercel is the best one for milage and dependability. I owned one and it is still going strong with over 160,000 miles on it.

A friend of mine just rebuilt the 3cyl engine in his old Geo Metro. The car looks like a piece of junk with some rust and a torn up interior. But he rebuilt the engine so he could drive it cross-country(PA to CA & back). Personally, I think he's just afraid to FLY(lol)!

There are several but not many with low mileage and good maintenance records. Good luck on that.

1990 Chevrolet Lumina, 1998 Honda Accord, Civic, any Toyota product. All will get above 30 mpg on the highway and about 25 in the city even with a V6.

Most of the older Honda and Toyota 4cyl. got pretty good mileage. Like others have also said, most VW TDI cars got extremely good on mileage.

VW diesels have always had great mileage, even in the seventies, but they stopped being gutless in the TDI in the 1997-or 1998 range.

Yes, Toyota Camry. 4 cyl. Also I use an electronic gadget called fueldoctor purchased via heartland america. It makes a big difference in gas mileage. check it out.

Get a mid 90's GM large sedan with the V6 3.8 liter engine. They made some smaller displacement that are even better. My 94 Buick Le Sabre is getting about 30 mpg on the highway at a steady 70 mph. I have heard of others getting similar mileage

Three things to look for that help on gas mileage are positive lock-up converter, variable overhead cam timing,2 ltr. or less engine size(reg. fuel)grade. Other... FWD,no racks, trailer hitch, all original under hood stuff, stock tire size. LOL

look for an accord or camry with manual transmission. should be able to get one of those relatively inexpensive and make over 30 highway easily.

I know you might be looking for better mileage, but you are probably going to be giving up safety features with a 15 year old car.

Once owned a "96" F Escort 2dr hatchback A/C automatic 4 cyl. This car in good mech. condition came close to what a civic ex could get on the average, but not quite hiway and during cold weather.

I think the reason being more alloys in use on the Civic, later aerodynamic technology, lighter weight engine ETC. Also lower profile, wider powerband.
