Hey, everyBuddy, technophiles, science buffs, space buffs, statistical analysis buffs, and just plain sci-fi geeks such as myself.

I was wondering if anyBuddy runs SETI@Home on their computer.

For those who don't know, SETI is the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, and SETI@Home is a science project that uses data received from the Arecibo Radio Telescope Array to search for possible signals from intelligent sources by analyzing data in "work units" on people's home and/or work computers, and then transmitting the results back to the computers at Berkeley.

The program that you download is a pretty cool screen saver in its older form - you see graphs of how much you've processed, and with the power levels of signals represented in as close as you can do to 3-D in graphs on your screen. There is a newer form out there, which I haven't downloaded yet, so I couldn't say what it looks like.

Ever since I fried my fast computer, I've backed off on that a bit. I've got a Toshiba notebook that was beating out plenty of theoretically faster desktops. It's got a 2.8 ghz desktop PIV with hyperthreading. It was fun when I was helping Team Gas Buddy to the top 10 standings!

It'll be going in to the service center Monday. I know the place - deliver there all the time. Unknown if they'll be able to save any of the data on it. I think I'll ask 'em to clean out the heat sink, make sure the fans both work, and bump the RAM up on it, if it's cheap enough. If not, I'll just order some online.

Sad news: Smokin' Lappy's out of commission for a while...I kept getting an error when I rebooted: "SMART failure predicted. Hard drive failure imminent. Back up all data and replace hard drive immediately." Pfft. Fine. So, I'll have to replace it but I won't have time until maybe this weekend... I hope you can make it! Bring hubby and the kids if you want - we always have a good time at the gatherings! So far I've met millste, Sue, katerat, JS_Gerwig, ServeGod, River Pig, and others too numerous to mention.

Sounds like you're running SETI Classic. If you plan on switching to the BOINC platform, we could always use help on Team GasBuddy!! You can join us here, if you'd like for SETI. We have people running ALL of the BOINC projects. I'm particularly interested in the LHC@Home project, which is designed to help engineer the world's most advanced particle accelerator. LHC@Home I've just got two little laptops running, one 2.8 Ghz desktop processor with HT, and one 600 Mhz Celeron model. It'd be great to have a new team member!

The reason is I've found very little intelligence on this planet and hope I can help discover it elsewhere, at which time I'll pack my bags and leave.

I don't know what caused all my errors, but I had to uninstall and remove all BOINC-related stuff twice before it stopped. Although, I know it wasn't page-file size like yours was. Mine just said "computing error". <shrug> Go anywhere good???? I like to live vicariously through other's vacations :-)

I had a bunch of errors on the good laptop. LHC is OUT of work! Don't know how long this one will last. How is SETI doing? Are they back up to speed? I think I'll go on Predictor if I do anything else during this outage. Depends on how long it lasts. Last time I was on Predictor for a couple, maybe 3 days.

I just had a bad round of LHC on the good laptop. No idea what caused it. I had to uninstall twice and remove every trace of BOINC. Then I re-installed and now it's fine. Load up on LHC!!! Set contact to 7.5 or so days.

My smokin' lappy crashed HARD!!!! Somehow a trojan got through Zone Alarm Pro, McAfee viruscan, and spysweeper........ I woke up and my computer was on a DOS screen reading out something about MAC addresses! Hope I didn't spam anybody..... Took me all day to clean it out of there, but I found it, back to work 100% on LHC!!!! You doing SETI now? Or still LHC?
