By the way, the capital is not really in Maryland. It's in DC. DC has a National Guard but they don't have authority everywhere plus the mayor would have to request them. Since the people, who provide the power, are taking care of the problem, what more could the guard possibly do?

Well everyone pretty much told you right.
I have to laugh at your sheep-like belief in that commercial that says Romney closes perfectly fine companies. I really didn't think anyone was stupid enough to believe that but then again, why else would they spend millions to air that ad.
If you want to know how I know that no one would have $5000 of food in a refrigerator, it's because I have at least an average intellect and I have common sense. There are people with thousands of dollars worth of food stocked away; but not in the fridge.
Wanting the National Guard to clear trees in Maryland shows that you do not have a grasp on basic government. But, as a liberal, that's not too surprising. I was out there for two days with a chainsaw helping to open roads and free up power lines. I have a comprehension of the situation; one which you could never comprehend (among other things).
So, son, don't try to open anyone's eyes; you're not qualified. A baby bird has a better chance at eye opening.

altlandf: you post about once every few months and every single time you come off like a freaking ID 10 T. You barely have a fifty percent grasp on reality. Those of us that are committed conservatives (with apolg's to BB) that force ourselves to read your entitled crap just for the . . . well, I'm knot quite sure why, seriously consider that about once every few months you just forget to take your meds.
You believe that all those who don't believe as you do are sheep. You are just wrong. However, I do look forward to your inverted logic if only to figure out some other way to try to focus the mirror back on your inanimate intellect.

I wish to revise my statement: grid power will likely go before the Government goes. When the USA bombed Iraq, the first thing they went after was the power grid. Not the Government as such. Any terrorist worth his salt, IMHO, will go after the grid first. Even though critical Government functions don't depend that much on grid power, they have backup sources. That's because the average citizen will panic the first time a terrorist decides to go after the power grid. It's both unprotected and unprotectable.

You REALLY want to send in the National Guard to deal with possibly energized lines? That's not what they're trained to do. And don't be calling the fact "beyond my comprehension" (at least I can spell the word correctly!) because I DID earn a degree in Electrical Engineering (although I was more computers than power lines, I had to take both to get out of school).
>Probably spelled wrong but forget it.
Yes, it was spelled wrong. You guessed correctly.
>How do you know a person don't have $5000 worth of food? Maybe >they are preparing for when the governmnet collapes.
You know nothing about people who prepare for when the Government collapses, which (IMHO) is more likely to happen if you draw a Government paycheck than not. Grid power will likely be the second thing to go. People with $5000 worth of food on hand because they fear a collapse shouldn't be depending on a functioning cold chain for the food to remain edible. Think freeze-dried food.

People who have lots of food saved up to ride out future problems also have strategies for coping with those difficulties - so the ones who have spoiled food are not the same group of people at all!
But even generators need to be serviced at regular intervals, and need fresh supplies of gas and oil, so even some of those people could begin to have problems soon.

alt, most homeowner policies will reimburse $500 for food spoiled due to extended power outages. I have 2 refrigerators with freezers and a deep freezer and I probably don't have any more than $600 worth of food in all three. $5,000? Get real.

Hey Sneaker 55, Plastic and other sheep all I was trying to do is prove a point that it's sad that the captial of the nation can't even get the power on and it's over a week. The point about the National Guard is they can remove the downed trees and clear the area so they can string the wire back up. But that's beyond Sneaker 55 and plastic's comprehention. Probably spelled wrong but forget it. How do you know a person don't have $5000 worth of food? Maybe they are preparing for when the governmnet collapes. There was a show on Discovery that showed how this guy was building these shelters in to the ground for when the time comes. Hey Plastic did you see your brethern the plastic mailbox that melted in the heat? This is why plastic should be banned in certain things. This will happen to us and then you will know why I posted this. It makes no sense to call someone ignorant when all they are trying to do is open peoples eyes. Just like people that keep voting in those primaries for Mitt Romney. How many times does a person have to be told that he goes into companies that were doing just fine and the company goes bankrupt by the time he leaves the company. Open your eyes up people.

Many Ohio residents still without power and some are not expected to have power restored until Tuesday of next week which would make 12 days without power in record high temps. In the county where I live, for 3 and 1/2 days following the storm, there were only 2 gas stations in the entire county open - lines went for miles and it took 1-1/2 hours to get gas when I went on Saturday with the sheriff's department directing traffic and keeping order. No ice to be had for over 40 miles, grocery store closed, no restaurants with power or food, spotty telephone coverage.

Yeah, the Kebecians are the ones who came into Richmond.
Silly, BB, of course they're getting paid. Why don't you find where they're not.
Some disasters get declared prior to the disaster, such as in the case of hurricanes. That way money is available immediately. Crews can mobilize immediately if the State says that a disaster will be declared. That way no time is wasted on getting responses. By the way, the storm was Friday the 29th. Outside help did not respond right away. I saw Florida Power and Light heading North on Monday the 2nd. I think that's about the same time that Quebec Hydro showed up.

Yes, Mindy, I was just about to say that Quebec Hydro responded as well!
Here is one news article about Ontario: see below! That means that the offices were all closed that day plus the weekend before, so I'm sure the crews didn't wait to find out if Hydro will ever be repaid - Plas, if you can find anywhere that the Canadian crews are being paid, do let us know.
Edit because link is too long . . . . . . .this one had better work!

Quebec Hydro has also sent some workers down to help. I believe that a lot of them are volunteers.

They are getting paid through their normal pay structure. They (and other companies) do not respond to help disaster areas until an emergency has been declared by the governor. That opens up state and Federal disaster coffers to be able to pay outside companies for their assistance. At that time we'll see line crews pour in from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, etc.

The 200 Ontario hydro workers are all volunteers! And they left on holiday Monday to help out.
I hope that there are no storms taking down trees at home while they are away.

No clue whatsoever. He seems to take some sort of headline and discussion from some political radio talk show and blathers about with his misunderstanding. It's annoying but we have to treat these special people nicely. They are people too; just not as functional as the rest of society.

This idiot lives in York, Pa. yet complains about D.C.? He has nothing better to do than complain about once a month about how horrible everything is. Mostly without a shred of common sense.

If your food is about to spoil, have a barbecue! That's what people did a few years ago when central circuits popped and produced a couple of days of widespread blackout. Plas is right, even with a full fridge and freezer, no one could have that much value in food stored away.
And get yourself a generator - lots of people on GB have them and have had to use them. Another solution - buy dry ice and keep it in the freezer, wrapped in blankets. That can keep things cold for many days.
Otherwise, clear up what you can, but NOT near live wires. And don't waste your utility's time by phoning to complain.

BB, we have some of your Canadian linemen down here working and their efforts are much appreciated.
Meanwhile, angry and less intelligent people are screaming about results but, as you indicated, are not lifting a finger to help. They want results but don't want to have to pay for it.

Excuse = thousands of trees down over hydro lines. Who do you want to get out with chain saws to clear things up?
And Ontario Hydro has also sent 200 experienced workers to help with the cleanup. What have you yourself been doing to help?

Yet another altlandf groan and moan on GasBuddy. There are utility commissions, they wouldn't stand the political heat about electric rates that would result from adding on enough utility workers on standby to fix everything instantly. The National Guard is not qualified to do utility work, neither are public works workers. You have to have utility workers to safely do the job. All the utilities have mutual aid agreements to get the power back quicker, in fact utility workers from just north of Houston headed out to the Eastern USA.
