Hey ONSLOWSCORTINA I have a 1996 Mercury Mystique I've been driving for two years. It had over 100,000 on it when I bought it and now it has 122,000 plus and It's been a great car for me, and gets like 26MPG combined highway/city!

We have an Escape that does the same thing, I was told that I could replace it but if I check the level it is not that important.

ColFlashman, you've got a rare ride there, bro'!
For our non-Canadian buddies, Mercury trucks were sold in Canada from 1946 to 1968 to give Canadian Mercury dealers a full line of vehicles to sell. They were V-8's exclusively (or as the ads put it, "V-8 definitely!") until 1957. In fact, no Canadian Ford product had a six until 1957.
After the Auto Trade agreement passed in 1965, however, Mercury trucks were built in the U. S. A. (the ME-100 Econolines in particular), and Ford trucks built in Oakville, Ontario were shipped to the U. S.!

My girlfriend has a 2002 Sable, which she loves to pieces, bought it used with 42000 miles. She could only get 21 MPG for the 1st 3 months of owning it. A month ago I changed the fuel filter (very dirty) and the air filter (very dirty too). Now shes getting close to 27 MPG. She also said that if I didn't drive with my heavy RIGHT FOOT she could do 28-29 MPG. I do like the car and the way it handles and accelerates VAROOOM!! And away we go.. Good on the HWY too... But she keeps haunting me to let her drive!! Girlfriend says...I want to drive! Only thing now is that the low coolant light stays on as soon as car is started. Seems to be a bad sensor cause the level is where its suppose to be.
Happy Sable

As long as I properly maintain my '58 Mercury M-100 Truck I've not a tick of trouble out of the "Wee Beastie".

A bad lower ball joint will tend to make noise (squeak). I tie rod end will make noticeable "play" in the steering wheel. Does that help? You can still have a car aligned with a bad ball joint, but not a bad tie rod end.

We have a 2000 Mercury Sable...very nice riding car. Love the leather seats and cd player. I just had a front end alignment. Then after I got it back, it had a humming noise coming from the rear tire. So, I stopped at a Bauer Built tire center and they said it was a busted ply on the tire. Had that fixed and now its fine. ( bought new tires) But, when I had it in to shop for the alignment, they were trying to tell me that I needed a wheel bearing and a joint replaced. I think they thought I was just a dumb ''woman'' and thought they could get some money out of me. I am not. My mechanic also said that they were trying to get me to replace parts that do not need to be replaced. I had the car totally checked out and the parts in question were in excellent condition. Thanks to all my brothers for teaching me about cars!!!!

We have a 96 Mercury Sable LS with 134K - overall very good car, but replacing rack and pinion steering was a nightmare!! We aLSo had to replace the clock spring in the steering wheel, which itself was easy, but getting the steering wheel off was a major headache as the holes were stripped from corrosion and the sort. It took 3 adults pulling on it with all of our might to finally work it free.

I've had a '99 Mountaineer for 3 years and I honestly believe the thing is possessed! Things don't work, then they do...windows won't go down, fan blowers won't run, dash buttons are stuck...no one can seem to find out what's wrong and when I bring it in for repairs, doesn't everything work just peachy keen!!!! It's possessed, I tell you!! Possessed...

purpleunity...sooo you bought your used car with 56,000 miles on it. well, 60 minutes news says that over 95 percent of used cars have had the miles meter turned back. plus who knows how the previous owner or owners drove it and what maintenance was or was not done. having never had a self healing car, i would think that if there were such cars, we would not need mechanics. nor would we need owners manuals telling us what maintenance to do at what mileages. yes, read that thing. take your car to a specialty alignment shop that has good referances. have them do a complete 4 wheel alignment. tip the mechanic well and he/she will show you lots of things about the cars undersides and what you should check every so often. find out where the fuel filter is at. and the oil filter. and the oil drain plug. and the transmission pan. and any grease fittings on the front suspension. sooooo the transmission didn't go into reverse. i'll bet the car did not warm up for at least 5 minutes ( longer in winter ) before being driven. transmission fluid expands as it gets warm. so when cool the fluid level is low. and when warmed up by the time you had it checked by a mechanic the fluid level was within normal range on the dip stick. remember, you probably don't know how many miles is really on this car, nor what maintenance has been done. as soon as you possibly can, change the transmission fluid and filter. change the fuel filter. change the air filter. grease any fittings on the front suspension. change the radiator coolant. and of course you've been changing the oil and filter every 2,000 to 3,000 miles, right???? of course you have. good motoring.

I had a 1995 Sable and it was the most comfortable car I ever owned. I had to get rid of it though because of continuing mechanical problems and the obvious expense issues. I traded for a 2000 Saturn SL2 and it is a great zippy car, but I miss the luxury of the Sable!!

We have a 97 Villager. Rides smooth, comfortable, quiet. MPG is not that great considering its smaller size and lack of straight line perfomance. Hight teens in town, low twenties highway. It has 114,000 miles with no problems so far (bought it with 80,000) other than normal wear and tear. Rear air works when it feels like it. Overall it is a nice vehicle that I would reccomend to anyone.

I bought a '95 Villager (also Nissan Quest). The ride is excellent, the fuel mileage should be better. The A/C is really supurb in this car.

I own a 1999 Mountaineer. I absolutely love it but the fuel economy (averaging at 15.29 MPG) drives me insane and puts a stress on the wallet especially in the summer when I do A LOT more driving.

I have a mercury villager and it seemed like something weird was going on. I left the house and started down the hill, when I realized that I forgot my cell phone, I put it in reverse and tried backing up the hill and it wouldnt go, so I went forward and tried turning around at the bottom of the hill and still no reverse, so I went around the block stoped and got my cell phone, then tried reverse again and it worked, tried it on and off all afternoon and everytime it worked. stop by the transmission place he checked the fluid which was ok, and test drived it of course it still went into reverse ok, anybody had anything like this happen to them????

I have a used (one previous owner) 1999 Mountaineer and love it. We just have one car now and so it takes some balancing to get to work and have my wife do the things she needs to get down, but I think its easier than having two.

I recently bought a Mercury Villager and love it. I purchased it in June 2004 and have only one major repair. I needed the back wheels adjusted they where not going straight, and it cost me over 350.00 they had to put something between the wheel and I think the brakes. It is not a 4 wheel drive, the mechanic said that sometimes cars will not correct themselves on their own. I had 56000 miles on it when purchased and now I have just jit the 70000 mile mark, yikes
