BP says new Gulf of Mexico project starts production

Reuters -- LONDON (Reuters) - Oil major BP (LSE:BP.) said oil had started pumping from a new project in deepwater in the Gulf of Mexico, its first new development to come onstream since the Macondo disaster in 2010 caused the largest offshore spill in U.S. history.

BP said on Tuesday the Galapagos development started initial production earlier in June, with oil flowing to a nearby platform 140 miles south east of New Orleans in water depths of 6,500 feet.

The Galapagos project was named by BP as one of a handful of major projects which will help demonstrate its return to work in the Gulf of Mexico, where it is the largest producer of oil and gas in a region which is key to its future, despite the oil spill at its deepwater Macondo well two years ago.

"Macondo disaster"? That is WHERE it happen ... but BP's actions (and their surrogates) are what caused it. Keeping the name BP disaster is much more accurate and identifiable.

I am amazed that the O'BUZZARD Administration has finally allowed any of the Oil companies to restart drilling in the Gulf, let alone BP. Has to be (all the Fund raisers the Buzzards is doing) or legal limits finally ran out allowing BP to resume!!!

HEBster - "Rather have another refinery"

Aren't our refineries already producing more than we use?

Isn't that why we're exporting refined products?

I do not think this will matter as the price at the pumps and everything is manipulated for the best profits it can make from finished products from oil.

Oil companies drill because the price is above 80 dollars. The oil companies will not drill for oil if it drops below 80 dollars it is not worth the effort.

They really can use this boost to start recovering their loss from the spill that is still costing them money. But the coast of Mississippi, Alabama and Florida are back in business full time. This is a very good time to enjoy their beaches and fresh caught Gulf of Mexico seafood.
