California refiners throttle diesel production

Central Valley Business Times -- With pump prices for diesel fuel at all-time highs, California refineries curtailed production of the fuel last week, the California Energy Commission reported Wednesday.

There were 1,896,000 barrels of diesel refined that met the clean-burning standards of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for the week ended May 16. The amount was 22.1 percent less than the previous week and 3.7 percent less than was refined during the comparable week in 2007, the commission said.

Gasoline production increased 8.7 percent from the previous week to 7,196,000 barrels of CARB gasoline. The total was 6.1 percent more than a year earlier.

planting season underway; and i don't see any hybrid tractors in the fields; few lpg; mostly diesels

They will have a big shock soon, diesel inventories don't drop with the cutback. And gasoline inventories skyrocket, cutting production there too. It will be the lowest gas selling Memorial Day weekend in many a year.

What happened, did they want to make sure there was a supply problem, so they can "justify" pointing to supply and demand as the reason for the high prices?

Oh, yeah, throttle back production and go up on the price even more because of a "shortage". They are already charging close to $5 a gallon for diesel and it costs less to produce than gas. Of course, the 18-wheelers use diesel and if they have to pay more, those that don't go out of business have to pass the additional costs along and the price of everything else goes up and up and up and so on and so on.

Diesel was $4.99, $5.05 and $5.05 at the three stations I reported that sell diesel... I believe I'd be looking for better efficiency if I drove a diesel - I am looking for better mileage than the 30 I get now

demand is up - production is up = profit is up
demand is down - production is down = profit is still KEPT up.
Either way THEY WIN.

Cutting the production of diesel just does not make sense.
Driving a high MPG diesel is much better than driving a high MPG gasoline vehicle. Even though diesel prices are much higher than gasoline.
Yeeessssch!
Produce more and many different alternative fuels using NON FOOD sources.
There are many lands alternative plants can be grown on that food crops cannot. Algae is a good source of bio oil for diesel or other refined products.
Limit the import of OPEC oil.

Still waiting for Nancy Pelosi's "common sense" plan (that she announced in 2006) to correct these prices...

Gas back then was around $2.69... now it is $4.09.

Come on Nancy. Please start sharing what your plan is. We're all waiting....

The article does not discuss the reasons at all, just the fact that they cut production. I wonder why. Probably because unit profits were higher on diesel.

I wonder what the new standards will be. Now that they have figured out how to meet the CARB standards. I look for them to make them so high, it will be impossible to refine and keep the cost low.

Why are Californnia refiners cutting back on diesel fuel by 22 per cent? That is going to have to drive up the price for truck drivers even more? And we will pay it through produce prices.
