Oil, gas producers pump up the volume in Colorado

Denver Post -- After a punishing year when natural-gas prices slid to their lowest level since 2002, there are signs of life in Colorado's oil and gas fields.
The state's largest publicly traded producers have, in the past few weeks, issued capital forecasts for 2010 showing rigs and money flowing into Colorado.
Still, the state is facing competition as some companies move money and equipment to Texas, Pennsylvania and Louisiana, and smaller operators continue to hold off on drilling.
"It is a selective recovery," said Peter Stark, vice president for industrial relations at IHS Corp., a Denver-based consulting firm. "It is focused on the larger, low-cost producers and plays with oil and liquids."

While low prices are a VERY good thing for almost everyone, they do suppress development and investment in supply.

However, prices will legitimately go up at some point, and the stuff will stay in the ground until it is economically viable to drill for it.

Yeah there is plenty of oil and gas around but they needed to push the price up on every 1 so as to get a biger pay day on the back end don't wait for a price decrease any time soon it aint ever going below $2.25 at the pumps again
If it ever makes it that low!

We have plenty of oil still in the ground. But do you want to pay for it? Enviro regs make it expensive to recover. Oil sands recovery destroys the landscape. Hydro-fracturing destroys the ground water supply. It's just not cheap anymore to pump oil. Either in money terms or environmental...

jackson661...That would be great but in most cases it is not allowed. We have plenty of oil under our feet here in the US, but we cant tap it. Off shore drilling has now been put off until 2016 by decree of hussien after saying we should start drilling there.

The Obama administration has done everything that they can to delay or cancel oil and gas drilling leases in the western US which took years of approvals and exploration to put together. Pres. Obama has stated that a price of $7/gal. would be about right.

How's it Obama's fault? Only fault you can call him on is not making offshore drilling more accessible.

Edtx2009 posted, "Sounds kind of strange.

A selective recovery?

It either is or isn't - a recovery."

As the article states its selective in that drilling activity for oil is recovering while drilling and production of natural gas has not. Prices are better for oil, thus activity will occur where the the most money can be made.

The article is not speaking as to the general economy, only to drilling and production activity in Colorado.

There is a lot of activity in Colorado. It begs the question why everyone wants to keep on with the leasing when there is still much "open" land for exploration and drilling.

Maybe there is more conversion to gas to generate electricity. Cleaner than coal. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.
